Disproportionate abdominal visceral fat mass reduction and complete reversal of cardiovascular remodelling accompany Roux-en-Y gastric bypass but not gastric banding - benefits beyond simply weight loss

چکیده
Background It is emerging that distribution of body fat, and in particular visceral fat (VFAT) is more important in determining cardiovascular risk than total body fat percentage. Rouxen-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) may preferentially reduce visceral fat, thus providing a mechanism to study the impact of visceral fat on cardiovascular function. We sought to determine 1) whether visceral fat is related to adverse left ventricular (LV) remodelling and reduced aortic distensibility, and 2) whether RYGB, by preferentially targeting visceral fat, results in greater improvements in LV geometry and vascular function than gastric banding.

Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Band: Complications, Removal and Revision in a Portuguese Highly Differentiated Obesity Treatment Center.
INTRODUCTION Our objective is to determine which complications lead to reoperation, and the outcomes of reoperation using laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding, laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass and laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy at Centro Hospitalar de São João. MATERIAL AND METHODS Observational study. Patients included were aged 18 to 65 years at first gastric banding, underwent rem...

We would like to thank Drs. Algahim and Taegtmeyer for their comments (1) on our article (2). We agree that in the long term a significant weight loss, such as that obtained after bariatric/metabolic surgery, can surely contribute to the improvement of insulin sensitivity. Nonetheless, although in our series both gastric banding andRouxen-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) led to significant improvement i...
متن کاملImpact of advanced age on weight loss and health benefits after laparoscopic gastric bypass.
BACKGROUND Advanced age is considered a relative contraindication to primary bariatric surgery at some institutions. As life expectancy is steadily increasing and quality of life is improving in our elderly population, we may need to reconsider the health benefits that obese elderly patients can obtain from bariatric surgery. Therefore, we examine the operative outcomes, weight loss, reduction ...

Introduction: Laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass and laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding are the most common bariatric surgery procedures. Therefore, this study aims to compare the safety of the newer procedure of Laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy compared to Laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass and Laparoscopic adjustable gastric bonding. Method: A systematic review was conducted on t...
متن کاملChanges in subcutaneous fat cell volume and insulin sensitivity after weight loss.
OBJECTIVE Large subcutaneous fat cells associate with insulin resistance and high risk of developing type 2 diabetes. We investigated if changes in fat cell volume and fat mass correlate with improvements in the metabolic risk profile after bariatric surgery in obese patients. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS Fat cell volume and number were measured in abdominal subcutaneous adipose tissue in 62 o...
